realisations

I recently realised my tendency to say "lol" whenever possible, especially on chats and instant messaging. Even sms'es. Thus the blog post.

"LOL" an abbreviation for laughing out loud, or laugh out loud, a common element of internet slang .Mostly, its used for expressing bodily reactions, in particular laughter, as text, including initialisms for more emphatic expressions of laughter such as LMAO ("laughing my arse/ass off"), ROTFL ("roll(ing) on the floor laughing") or ROFL ("roll(ing) on [the] floor laughing"), and BWL ("bursting with laughter").

Thanks Wikipedia. =)

I rarely use anything other than "lol" but, hmms, looks like "lol" has competitors. Other abbreviations are too abstract for me to use, :( its just too much for me. For me to LAUGH MY ASS OFF is just too, unimaginable.

Though often, saying "lol" is just expressing how much does what the other person say amuses you. Or at times, (for me at least) its something to say when you really go speechless.

like,

A : i think im fat laa, i think im slim but people think i still fat ler. how how how?
YY: lol. dunno.

Some people call it a symbol of appreciation to your attempt of humor. HAHA.

I do doubt the main purpose of this word because really, who and exactly how often anyone is actually laughing out loud when they are saying "lol"?? A research should be carried out, :D
HAHAHAHA

and did you know, lol is a Dutch word which, coincidentally, means "fun" ("lolling" means "funny").

Variants of "LOL"

  • LEL: An abbreviation for both "Laughing Extremely Loud" and "Laughing Eccentrically Loud.
  • lolz: Occasionally used in place of LOL.
  • lulz: Often used to denote laughter at someone who is the victim of a prank, or a reason for performing an action. Can be used as a noun — e.g. "do it for the lulz."According to a New York Times article about Internet trolling, "lulzmeans the joy of disrupting another's emotional equilibrium"
  • lolwutlol + wut, used to indicate bemused laughter, or confusion.
  • Lawl or Lal: Pseudo-pronunciation of LOL. Saying "lawl" is sometimes meant in mockery of those who use the term LOL, and usually not meant as serious usage.
  • LOLOLOLOL: For added emphasis, LOL can be appended with any number of additional iterations of "OL". In cases such as these, the abbreviation is not to be read literally (i.e., "Laughing out loud out loud out loud out loud"), but is meant to suggest several "LOL"s in a row.

(:

and sometimes, i LOL than lol because im emphasizing on the LOL-ness of your lol-story.
